RESULTS 2024 Grassroots Board Elections

Dear active RESULTS Grassroots Partners,  

We urge you to vote for one of your fellow RESULTS volunteers to represent the grassroots volunteers on the boards of RESULTS and RESULTS Educational Fund. This is a very important decision and we have great candidates. 

We need your vote by June 22!  

RESULTS needs to fill ONE Grassroots Director position to serve a term of three (3) years beginning in July 2024. (There are four grassroots board seats in total.) Grassroots Directors represent the volunteers on the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors works with the Executive Director (Joanne Carter) to shape the direction of RESULTS. This work includes providing guidance on policies for the organization and fiduciary oversight. (Fiduciary oversight means monitoring finances and resources). The person elected will serve on the Grassroots Directors Committee, which meets monthly. They will also chair or serve on other Board Committee(s) and participate in fundraising. Grassroots board members represent grassroots perspectives on the board, which is a critical role.

Kasapo Chibwe

Candidate Bio: Kasapo Chibwe works for World Vision as a policy advisor for global health and has been in this role since November 2021. She has a master’s in health communication from DePaul University and has worked in both the United States and Zambia. Her professional background has been in public health with experiences in HIV/AIDS research and teaching public health at the University of Zambia. 

In her spare time, she has volunteered in various capacities, spanning across different sectors in food pantries, orphanages, and organizations with the most recent experience as a RESULTS volunteer. 

Statement of Intent: I joined RESULTS as a fellow because I saw an opportunity to help me understand how advocacy works — I had just taken on a new role and one component was to advocate to the USG under the global health portfolio. I stayed on after the fellowship, continuing as a volunteer because I learned so much and enjoyed working with both my group (Northern Virginia) and RESULTS staff. 

I am honored to have been nominated to the board and when elected, I hope to share my perspective which has been shaped by both living here in the U.S. as an adult and growing up in Zambia. I have seen first-hand how foreign aid works and helps lift families out of poverty. I’d like to be part of a group of people who continue to take this work forward, not only globally but domestically as well. Because as much as the U.S. is a developed country, a superpower in its standing with the rest of the world, it also encounters similar problems. It has people facing poverty at home as well. And we need to continue to shine the light on our domestic issues as we fight for the global need. 

My goal as a board member would be to continue to lift the voices of volunteers, centering their lived experience in our work and offering a different perspective as needed. Thank you for your support.

Candidate Bio: Hi! My name is Elizabeth Brown, and I am from Winston-Salem, NC. I am a mother to two boys, ages 6 and 4, a small business owner, a 2024 Fellow, and a RESULTS advocate. I am a certified paralegal and a WSSU graduate in Psychology. 

More importantly, I am someone who values and prioritizes my community. I’ve lived in Winston-Salem my entire life; I grew up in a little neighborhood known as the “Old Boston Projects” and I truly enjoy being able to go back and help my people by doing Summer Programs with the children and feeding the homeless communities. 

I also love to paint, spend time in nature, practice yoga, kickbox, and teach. I’m the person who learns a random fact and tells everyone else about it for the rest of the day. Did you know cayenne pepper can be used to stop bleeding? Well, now you do.  

Statement of Intent: My name is Elizabeth Brown, and I am from Winston-Salem, NC. I am a mother to two small boys, ages 6 and 4, a small business owner, and an advocate for prioritizing all life, human, plant, and animal. I’ve been a part of the RESULTS NC group for a little over a year and have enjoyed being group co-lead since the beginning of 2024. I spend most of my free time volunteering at my son’s school, giving meals to the homeless, and spending time in nature doing various activities. 

I found RESULTS shortly after my mother’s passing, and immediately knew that my calling was to work in advocacy and lobbying. I wanted to find an organization that prioritized the voices and experiences of everyday people like me. People with lived experience of poverty and social injustice. Through my experiences, I’ve been able to see the short- and long-term effects that living in poverty can have on the mental, spiritual, and physical well-being of children and adults. 

During my time with RESULTS, one thing has become abundantly clear to me, and that is that there is a huge disconnect and understanding towards people who live or have lived in poverty. This lack of knowledge causes a lack of empathy towards these at-risk populations and the true way to defeat poverty is through education. Giving real-life examples and stories that highlight what it is truly like to live in poverty. What it feels like to go into a store and be embarrassed to swipe your SNAP card or what it’s like to live in a food desert. How things like the CTC are used in low-income households and how much that support is needed. 

I am running for the Grassroots Board Member position because I want to add to the RESULTS anti-oppression values and continue to support and inspire other advocates to lead. To use their stories and voices to bring effective change to our members of Congress and our communities. 

RESULTS taught me that we are all unique, and our experiences combined are the force for change. When I volunteer at my son’s school, I see those little faces and feel empowered and inspired to continue doing what we do at RESULTS in education, anti-poverty, and health care. As we lead, we will influence the littles to do the same and provide them with a better world to not live in but to thrive in. 

As a member of the Grassroots Board, I promise to uphold our anti-oppression values, continue to educate myself and others, and work together to ensure every voice and every story is heard. This is how we will change the world.
