Push lawmakers to address child poverty and global health in December
Congress returns to Washington this week. With only a few weeks left before the end of the year, there is a lot to get done. Rumors are that work on a possible tax package will ramp up this week, making our advocacy on the Child Tax Credit (CTC) particularly important. That is why a limited number of RESULTS volunteers will be traveling to Washington to lobby key senators on the CTC this Thursday. You can back them up by continuing to get media published urging Congress not to pass any corporate tax cuts in December unless a fully refundable CTC is also included. With people struggling to cover basic expenses, the CTC would provide much-needed relief to millions of American families.
In addition, the End TB Now Act is still pending in the House and Senate. This bipartisan legislation would save lives in countries still fighting against this preventable yet deadly disease. The bill spends no new money; it simply focuses existing resources toward the communities that are most in need. It is important legislation that needs to pass. And if doesn’t, we are back to square one in a new Congress whose willingness to consider such legislation is unknown. We learned from the passage of the global malnutrition bill earlier this fall, non-controversial legislation can move fast – if the pressure is there make it happen.
TAKE ACTION: Local media still makes a difference in pressuring lawmakers into action. Make sure to take at least one media action this week to help low-income families here is the U.S. (CTC) and around the world (End TB Now Act).
- Got Five Minutes? Send a letter to the editor (LTE) using our online media actions. The RESULTS Action Center has both CTC and TB online media alerts. They are easy and quick. Use them to send your letters today (and be sure personalize them if you have time).
- Got Fifteen Minutes? Draft and submit a personalized LTE and send it to your local paper. Increase your chances of getting published by writing your own letter to the editor about the CTC and/or TB. To get started, our November Action Sheets have background info and talking points. Also, remember to call on your members of Congress by name in your letters (for the CTC, call on senators; for TB, call on senators and representatives). Please let us know if you need help.
If you get published, please share the letter with aides in your House and Senate offices ASAP. Decisions could be made within days so don’t wait to make your voice heard. Also, please let us know by filling out our Media Report Form and we’ll add it to our Grassroots Media Packets.
Join Saturday’s National Webinar with Sen. Sherrod Brown
Join us for the final RESULTS National Webinar of 2022 this Saturday, December 3. We are thrilled to welcome long-time friend of RESULTS Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH). The senator will share his thoughts on how we can best advocate for an expansion of the Child Tax credit and improvements to our global tuberculosis policy in the final weeks of the 117th Congress. We’ll also take time to celebrate and thank you – our volunteers – for your hard work and accomplishments this year. Please join us!
TAKE ACTION: The December RESULTS National Webinar is this Saturday, December 3 at 1:00 pm ET. Register for the webinar today. Once registered, you will receive login information later this week via e-mail (please check your junk or spam folders if you have not received anything by Friday afternoon). Quick News on U.S. and Global Poverty
Give us your input on in-person gatherings. COVID-19 forced us to find new ways to stay in relationship over the past several years. But we know that in-person activities help us build deeper relationships. With the possibilities of in-person gatherings opening again in 2023, we would like your ideas and preferences for gathering in-person. We will take this information, along with input from staff and our international partners, and put together some in-person opportunities that will reconnect us across the RESULTS network. Complete this survey before Monday, December 5, with our thanks!
Sign your local RESULTS group on to CTC letter. The Children’s Budget Coalition has new Child Tax Credit sign-on letter urging Congress to again expand the CTC. Help us build support for the CTC by adding your local RESULTS group to the list of signers. You can sign by filling out this form by 5:00 pm ET on Monday, December 5.
The interconnectedness of our issues. Education. The Child Tax Credit. Global health funding. Nutrition. How do these issues relate? To mark World Children’s Day this month, Meg Gardinier, Global Education Manager, wrote a blog piece on how our issues intersect, illuminating how your advocacy makes a comprehensive difference in combatting poverty here and abroad. Read and be inspired!
Thank signers of congressional CTC letter. If your member of Congress signed the Jayapal-Gomez CTC letter urging to congressional leaders to expand the CTC in tax legislation this year, be sure to send a thank you to their tax aide and urge them to keep pushing the CTC with leadership and their colleagues.
Media hooks of the week. To help you in your media advocacy, here are suggested media “hooks” this week to use in letters to the editor:
- U.S. Poverty: Congress is back in Washington this week to finish up the year. Tell them not to leave without expanding the CTC to all low-income families.
- Global Poverty: The upcoming holiday season reminds us how grateful we are for the gift of good health. Ask Congress to prioritize global health by passing the End TB Now Act.
