U.S. Poverty Campaigns

Weekly Update | August 15, 2017

“As an anti-poverty advocate, I applaud the courage and stature of the grownups of our state for understanding that we thrive only when the least of us does.”

RESULTS Stamford (CT) volunteer Lucinda Winslow in an August 8 letter to the editor in the New Haven Register

In This Week’s Update:

Quick Media Action: Use Media to Protect Medicaid

Got Two Minutes? Get Ready for TONIGHT’s U.S. Poverty National Webinar at 8:00pm ET

Tonight, August 15 is the RESULTS U.S. Poverty National Webinar. This will be a different type of webinar, in that we will spend time celebrating and reflecting. Celebrating the health care victory and the success of the RESULTS International Conference, and then reflecting on how these successes keep you motivated and sustained in this work. We’ll have shares from the grassroots and of course update you on the latest concerning our issues. Please join us.

TAKE ACTION: Take two minutes to remind your local RESULTS group about the RESULTS U.S. Poverty National Grassroots Webinar tonight, August 15 at 8:00 pm ET. Remind members if your group is meeting for the call or if group members (and Free Agents) are calling in on their own. To join online, login at http://fuze.me/32255914 or dial in by phone at (201) 479-4595, Meeting ID: 32255914#. Plan to log in or call in no later than 7:55 pm ET. The slides for the July Webinar are available on our National Webinars page. If your group is listening to the call later, we’ll put a link to the call on this page after the webinar.

Got Ten Minutes? Contact Schedulers about Lobby Meetings and Town Halls this Month (August Action)

Congress is on recess until Labor Day, giving us time to speak out against future attacks on Medicaid, and cuts to anti-poverty programs to pay for tax legislation in the proposed 2018 House budget. In particular, the full House of Representatives will vote on their budget early next month, which includes cuts to basic assistance programs and tax breaks that will worsen wealth inequality and the racial wealth gap using the “fast-track” process (no filibuster in the Senate) called budget reconciliation. Congress needs to hear that the backlash they got from attempts to roll back health care was not an anomaly. They need to know that any attempt to stop and undo the progress we’ve made in reducing poverty will be met with the same, fierce opposition.

TAKE ACTION: Take ten minutes to request face-to-face meetings with your representatives and senators in August. Contact schedulers (on our Elected Officials page under “Staff” for your members of Congress) to request a meeting and to ask about any town halls or public appearances they’re making in your area (also check www.townhallproject.com). The August Action has tips for requesting meetings and laser talks on the issues you want to highlight in your meetings. As you get meetings or town halls scheduled, please include them in our Lobby Meeting Schedule Form. When you get a meeting or town hall on your calendar, please contact Meredith Dodson ([email protected]) to strategize on messaging.

Got Sixty Minutes? Join RESULTS Anti-Oppression Discussion Tomorrow

Now more than ever, it's important to look boldly at the reality of race and gender bias — and understand how the two can combine to create even more harm. As part of our work to better understand overt and subtle forms of oppression in society, RESULTS is hosting a webinar to examine “intersectionality” as described by civil rights advocate and scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in this enlightening TED Talk. In this moving talk, she calls on us to bear witness to multiple forms of exclusion happening simultaneously and speak up for victims of prejudice. We hope you will join us for a discussion exploring the relationship between intersectionality and poverty.

TAKE ACTION: Take sixty minutes to join the RESULTS Anti-Oppression webinar discussion on Intersectionality tomorrow, August 16 at 8:30 pm ET. To join the Webinar, go to: http://fuze.me/34326078 or dial in by phone at: (201) 479-4595, Meeting ID: 34326078#. You can watch Kimberlé Crenshaw’s TED talk at: https://www.ted.com/talks/kimberle_crenshaw_the_urgency_of_intersectionality/up-next.
