Global Weekly Update December 21, 2009

December 21, 2009

Congratulations, Grassroots Advocates, on a Terrific 2009!Bangladesh children

On December 12, 207 of us gathered on our final, joint global-domestic national conference call to celebrate our victories in this challenging year and to look ahead to 2010. Thanks to your work in 2009, we generated momentum on making the dream of a Global Fund for Education a reality, made strides toward addressing the global tuberculosis epidemic by increasing funding for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria and bilateral TB funding, and came one step closer to getting Muhammad Yunus the Congressional Gold Medal by having S.846 pass. You also took to heart the call to fuel our work with financial resources. We look forward to providing an update on the fall fundraising campaign after the new year.

Tomorrow, February 23: Alex Counts, the founder and CEO of Grameen Foundation — and former legislative director at RESULTS — will be on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal tomorrow, Wednesday, February 23, 9:30–10:00 am ET. You can also watch it live at C-SPAN’s website the Grameen Foundation invites you to call in and ask questions about microfinance for the poor!

Set up in-district meetings: Many of you will be requesting in-district meetings with your members of Congress during recess. Check out the December Action Sheet and laser talk for tips on how to request and secure a meeting, and keep an eye out for the January Action Sheet next week to help prepare your requests. Please note that the RESULTS office will close at noon on December 24 and will reopen January 4. If you need support for a recess meeting during the holiday period, contact John Fawcett ([email protected]) or Ken Patterson ([email protected]; (828) 398-4562).

Exciting January conference call: We’ll begin our 2010 work with a very special guest on our monthly conference call on Saturday, January 9. Representative Nita Lowey (NY-18), the chair of the House Foreign Operations Subcommittee, will be talking about education and foreign aid priorities for 2010. During the call, we’ll also get a preview of our 2010 legislative campaigns and grassroots planning efforts. It will be a terrific way to start off the year.

As you take time to rest, rejuvenate, and reflect this holiday season, may you find a measure of joy in the brave work you’ve done and a dose of energy as you reflect on the possibilities of the new year. It is a privilege to partner with you all as we seek to put poverty in the history books. May moments of peace, joy, and hope be yours during this festive time.
