Sun Sentinel Editorial Page Editor Wins Media Award

Washington, DC, July 15, 2018 — RESULTS is pleased to announce that Rosemary O’Hara of South Florida’s Sun Sentinel has won the 2018 Cameron Duncan Media Award.

RESULTS gives this award annually to a journalist who demonstrates outstanding reporting on poverty. The award is named in honor of Cameron Duncan, a former associate executive director of RESULTS who devoted his life to fighting poverty.

O’Hara, editorial page editor of the Sun Sentinel, accepted the award during a ceremony on Sunday, July 15, at the RESULTS International Conference in Washington, DC. A University of Florida graduate, she has worked at several newspapers, including the Miami Herald, Cincinnati Enquirer and Tampa Tribune, where she also was editorial page editor. She is a director of Association of Opinion Journalists and a four-time juror of the Pulitzer Prizes.

The RESULTS chapter in Miami, Florida, who nominated O’Hara for this award, noted her “passion both in the issues she covers and how she covers them.”

In 2017, O’Hara published an in-depth series about U.S. investments in global health and education, including urging the U.S. to fully fund the Global Partnership for Education.

In addition to her columns on global poverty, last year “O’Hara wrote a series of hard hitting and powerful editorials to help stop the effort to gut Medicaid. And in the wake of recent mass shootings and deadly hurricanes in South Florida, her work reminded readers that they were not alone or forgotten,” said the nominating team.

“We are thrilled to present Rosemary with this award,” said RESULTS Executive Director Joanne Carter. “She writes with heart, grit, and urgency. And she calls policymakers into action, through her work on both the biggest global poverty issues, and those close to home.”
