RESULTS Mourns the Passing of Rep. Tom Lantos

Washington, DC (February 14, 2008) — It is with great sadness that RESULTS learned of the passing of Representative Tom Lantos of California. RESULTS, a grassroots advocacy organization, had worked with Rep. Lantos on issues pertaining to global poverty and health.

“Rep. Lantos was a dedicated leader in the fight against injustice worldwide, including the injustices of poverty and disease,” said Joanne Carter, Associate Executive Director of RESULTS. “His efforts on behalf of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in the developing world fundamentally transformed the fight against those diseases and his support for programs like microfinance for the poorest impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. His passion for human rights encompassed the right of all people to have their most basic needs met and his dedication and compassion will be truly missed.”

“We will miss Tom Lantos, not only for his leadership and support on so many issues, but also for the personal friendship and strong working relationship we’ve had with Congressman Lantos and his staff,” said Joel Rubinstein, a Lantos constituent and RESULTS partner. “We are proud that we could always depend on our representative to support the rights of those around the world left voiceless by the cruelty of poverty.”

RESULTS activists and staff across the country hope to honor Lantos’ legacy by working to ensure full funding for AIDS, TB and malaria programs when the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) program is reauthorized this month.

“Although we are saddened to lose such a great advocate, we will continue to fight for those issues in which he so strongly believed,” said Carter.
