Congress progresses legislation containing an expansion of the Child Tax Credit, RESULTS calls upon lawmakers to pass it swiftly into law

The bipartisan Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024 passed out of committee, clearing a path for the Child Tax Credit expansion if Congress brings it to a vote.

Washington DC, January 19, 2024—Today, the House Ways and Means Committee voted out of committee a proposed bipartisan tax package that includes an expansion of the Child Tax Credit (CTC) in a decisive vote of 40 to 3. The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024 expands the CTC over the next three years so that more families with low incomes — including those with multiple children — can access the full credit amount.

“This legislation represents a critical opportunity to reduce child poverty,” said RESULTS Executive Director, Dr. Joanne Carter. “RESULTS applauds the members of Congress who have come to the table to craft a bipartisan deal that includes important expansions of the CTC for families with low incomes,” continued Carter, “especially as tax season fast approaches. Passing this legislation now will make a vital, tangible difference for many families negotiating inflation, the affordable housing crisis, and other devastating effects of poverty and oppression. RESULTS urges Congress to pass the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act in time for the 2023 filing season as an important step toward economic justice.”

Since the COVID-era CTC expansion lapsed, 19 million children in poverty lost access to the full credit, which their families overwhelmingly spent on food, shelter, school supplies, and other basic needs. The CTC expansion in the proposed legislation would ensure that 16 million of these children would see some increase in their benefit including an additional 5 million who would get the full credit. By 2025, the families of an estimated 500,000 children would have the tools to lift themselves above the poverty line.

“This proposed tax package will unlock resources for millions of families with low incomes and reduce poverty, and this is why RESULTS supports it,” said Carter. “But we know that millions of kids are left behind, which is unacceptable. RESULTS advocates will not rest until all families in poverty have access to the full CTC.”
