What's Next? Write to the Media: Congress should reinforce, not rip apart, the safety net

by Meredith Dodson, Director of U.S. Poverty Campaigns

After a historic weekend, unfortunately we’re already seeing our elected leaders move to undermine some of the country’s most important anti-poverty programs like SNAP (formerly Food Stamps) and Medicaid. The federal safety net cuts poverty almost in half, yet some members of Congress have their sights set on dismantling these very programs (including the Affordable Care Act).

As the media continues to cover the events of this past weekend and others in our community are looking for ways to engage, they need to hear from you about what’s ahead. Already in January, RESULTS volunteers have had 30 media pieces published in 17 states and the District of Columbia. But we have to keep the pressure on. We want your members of Congress to see their name in the paper every week if possible telling them to protect SNAP and Medicaid  Use a letter to the editor to remind Congress that they must reinforce, not rip apart, the programs that help millions of low-income Americans make ends meet.

TAKE ACTION: Use our online template to submit a letter to your local paper, then encourage your friends and family to send in their own.

Please share this with others looking for a way to engage in advocacy — many others in our communities are looking for ways to get involved, and raising our voices in the media (and getting involved with a local RESULTS group) is a great way to build momentum!
