Start the Year Off Right: Request Face-to-Face Lobby Meetings to Make Your Voice Heard!

January 17, 2013
by Meredith Dodson, Director of U.S. Poverty Campaigns

Happy New Year! As you most likely heard, Congress started off the year by passing a deal to address the “Fiscal Cliff” — check out our blog for a summary of the deal, a recap of our advocacy to protect tax credits for low-income working families, and insightful breakdown of the situation means for foreign affairs. But our battles are not over: the next round of deficit reduction threatens all the poverty-focused work RESULTS has spent decades on, both for people here in the U.S. and for people all around the world — programs like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC), SNAP (formerly Food Stamps), and strategic, compassionate, poverty-focused foreign assistanceRESULTS advocates across the country know what makes the biggest difference — Congressional Staff on What Advocacy Strategies Have the Most Influencein-person visits from constituents are far more influential than paid lobbyists!

This is a time of year to set goals – and make sure you’ve got a plan to follow through! RESULTS  activists are meeting this month to lay out goals for the year, and this is the perfect time to put in requests for a face-to-face meeting with your members of Congress. The House and Senate will both be on recess February 18-22, and many members of Congress are available before then. Not sure how to make a face-to-face lobby visit happen? Check out our U.S. Poverty Action Sheet and Laser Talk or our Global Poverty Action Sheet and laser talk for steps to make it happen. In addition, review Activist Milestone: Meet Face-to-Face with Your Member of Congress and our new PowerPoint for additional guidance.

We are as committed as ever to developing influential relationships with our members of Congress and supporting Congress to make smart decisions that won’t tackle budget problems at home by short-changing life-saving foreign assistance or sacrificing critical services that can move low-income Americans from poverty to opportunity.

Have the conversation. Show your passion for the end of poverty. Together, we can make 2013 a watershed year in turning the tide on extreme poverty.
