Although optimistic and uplifting, the film does not shy away from highlighting the gravity of the present situation.
Raised in Soweto under South Africa’s apartheid regime, Yvonne Chaka Chaka is a remarkable African success story. Her twenty-seven year music career has resulted in twenty-one albums, many of which are platinum, making her one of Africa’s most successful artists. Yvonne was the first black child to appear on South African television and she has since shared the stage with top stars including Bono and Beyoncé. She uses her voice to motivate audiences including heads of state and other global leaders for the causes she believes in. In 2011 Yvonne was ranked eighth on Forbes’ list of the most influential African celebrities. Yvonne began her campaign against malaria when one of her band members lost his fight with the disease in 2004. Yvonne was the first Goodwill Ambassador for the global Roll Back Malaria Partnership, serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Malaria and the United Nations MDG Envoy for Africa, and was chosen by Nelson Mandela as the first ambassador for his children’s fund. She has also established her own charity, the Princess of Africa Foundation, and is the recipient of the Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship Award.

Where and When: TB-HIV Networking Zone, Exhibit Hall C, Booth #64; Friday 7/27/2012, 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Description: The world has changed dramatically over the past 10 years. We’ve gone from hand wringing over the AIDS crisis, to hope. We can thank scientists, political and moral leaders, and activists for the progress. But advocates are the unsung heroes of our progress. Without their passion, persuasion, pressure, and creativity we would not be talking about the end of AIDS. The extraordinary efforts of RESULTS volunteer advocates have helped mobilize hundreds of millions of dollars for AIDS and TB/HIV. This session will provide insights into the advocacy tools and tactics RESULTS has used to generate media, congressional support, and political will to address AIDS and TB/HIV.
10. Combating Stigma: Women and TB-HIV:
Where: Main Stage, Women’s Networking Zone, Global Village
When: Thu 7/26/2012, 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Description: Women living with HIV are particularly prone to TB and experience different risk factors, social and economic consequences, and barriers to treatment than men. Positive TB diagnoses have damaging consequences for women. Socially, the stigma of having TB falls more heavily on women than men. In some communities, a positive TB diagnosis may force women into divorce or, if unmarried, create difficulty in finding a marriage partner. While there has been dialogue about combating stigma in women living with HIV, little has been done to address the stigma of a positive TB diagnosis. This dialogue session aims to create an open space to discuss ways to combat the “double stigma” faced by women with TB-HIV co-infection.
The session will be structured so all participants sit facing each other, rather than having the facilitators in the front. All participants will be encouraged to share how TB-HIV affects women in their communities and share effective methods for combating stigma.
