The 2018 RESULTS International Conference: Day 3 highlights

“You are here not just to talk to legislators, but to fundamentally change the world.”

As RESULTS advocates prepared for upcoming advocacy meetings on Capitol Hill, former member of Congress David Jolly (R-FL) came to the International Conference to let them know exactly why – and how – their voices matter.

“You are the front line,” he said. “You have a subject matter expertise that your member of Congress just doesn’t have. There is no more effective advocacy organization to address global poverty and access to health care than RESULTS.”

• Tishaura O. Jones, treasurer of St. Louis, explained how she started her city’s very first Office of Financial Empowerment and aims to “look at every issue through racial equity lens.” While she is working hard to create positive change in her city, she reminded the packed room that “slow and steady sometimes beats fast and flashy. Be steadfast in your commitment to end poverty, be authentic, and be yourselves every day.”
• Annette Dixon, vice president for human development at the World Bank, spoke about the complexities of poverty and health issues around the world. In some countries, “even the highest income households still have children who are stunted. We are working hard to understand the complexity of the issue. What is happening is a result of policy failures that are affecting the long-term potential of people in their countries.”
• A workshop explored the intersection of immigration and anti-poverty policy. Melissa Boteach of the Center for American Progress and Sonya Schwartz of the National Immigration Law Center shared details and messaging strategies to combat a proposed policy change that would make the use of public assistance programs (like SNAP, Medicaid, and the Earned Income Tax Credit) a barrier to obtaining permanent residency or citizenship in the United States.
