International Conference Follow-up
Invigoration. Camaraderie. Encouragement. Insights. Speaking truth to power. It was all there at this year’s International Conference. And next year’s conference, our 40th anniversary celebration, will be even more exciting.
But, in a way, this year’s conference continues because persistent follow-up is always key.
Here are some things to work on now that we’re into August recess:
Report your meetings. Please take a few minutes to log each of your Hill meetings, as meetings with Congress are a key indicator of our effectiveness.
Follow up on your meetings. Thank members of Congress and their staff for meeting with you and then reiterate your requests during the meeting. Ask them when you can expect to hear back on the legislators’ decision(s).
Write an op-ed or letter to the editor. Write to describe what it’s like to advocate, to celebrate a leadership effort demonstrated in one of your meetings, or to call a legislator to action.
Get a face–to-face meeting in August. If you weren’t able to meet with your representative or senators, contact the scheduler and ask for a face-to-face meeting in the district or state during the August recess. It is always powerful to meet with your elected officials in person, and that type of action isn’t reserved just for DC!

Our Campaigns Work: Global Fund and Global Nutrition
- Global Fund Resolution. H.Res. 517 is now open for cosponsorships, and it calls on the U.S. to demonstrate a brand of bold leadership. On October 10, nations from around the globe will have a choice at the Global Fund replenishment conference: continue maximum necessary funding and help save up to 16 million more lives . . . or slide back in progress. Since the beginning, the U.S. has played a leading role in the Global Fund, providing a full one-third of its financial resources. That needs to continue as the world comes together to reach the $14 billion minimum target. We need every possible representative voicing this same goal, with equal resolve. Call your representative today and make your request.
- Global Fund Media. Two months to go! Can we fill in the blank spots on the our media “heat map” before the Global Fund replenishment on October 10? Use the tools in this blog post to write; keep the issue alive and the pressure on for a successful replenishment. At least 170 pieces published so far!
- Global Nutrition. We have two resolutions on global nutrition, H.Res. 189 and S.Res. 260, open for cosponsors. Have you made your requests? Take a look at the support material we used at the International Conference to make these requests. Make your asks as we ramp up our global nutrition work ahead of a key nutrition summit in 2020.
