Quick Media Action: Tell Senators to Protect Medicaid!
Take Action! |
Got Two Minutes? Senate Could Act Soon – Tell Senators to Oppose Ending Medicaid as We Know It!
Congress is now back in Washington continuing their work on health care. The Senate continues to work behind closed doors on their alternative to the House’s American Health Care Act (AHCA, H.R. 1628). News is that the Senate could release their own health care bill as early as this week. While a Senate health care bill will not mirror H.R. 1628 exactly, it is more likely than not to include drastic and dangerous changes to Medicaid. Remember, these cuts are being used to give a massive tax cut to the wealthy and big corporations. Make sure your senators know that protecting Medicaid and the people it serves must be paramount.
TAKE ACTION: Take two minutes to send an e-mail to your senators urging them to reject cuts and changes to Medicaid. Use our Medicaid action alert to tell them in no uncertain terms that you oppose efforts to take health care away from millions of Americans.
Got Ten Minutes? Contact Senate Health Aides about Medicaid This Week (May Action)
In the wake of reports that the Senate might begin the process of moving a health bill this week, we need to keep the pressure on the upper chamber to protect Medicaid in whatever plan they come up with. While there have been many reports claiming that the Senate is not looking to pass the House health bill as is, they are still using the House bill as the basis for their own bill which is likely to include many of its harmful provisions. The cuts and changes to Medicaid in the House bill are so deep ($840 billion in cuts to pay for more reckless tax breaks, 14 million lose coverage), even meeting the House half way would be disastrous. Many members of Congress have supported similar cuts and changes to Medicaid in the past and still do (some senators want even deeper cuts to the program).
If you have not contacted your Senate health aide about opposing cuts and changes to Medicaid, this is the week to do it. If you have contacted the aide, follow up to see if there are any new developments. Make sure your senators know that the people they represent – you – want Medicaid protected.
TAKE ACTION: Take ten minutes to call both your Senate health aides to talk about protecting Medicaid in any new health legislation. Be persistent. If you cannot get them directly (find names here), call the local office to see if they can set up a meeting with you and the health aide. The May Action has talking points and a link to Medicaid state fact sheets. Let them know about the health insurance coverage losses in your state with data from the Center for American Progress. If you need help, please contact Jos Linn ([email protected]).
Note: We are delaying the June Action for a few days so we can stay focused on protecting Medicaid in case the Senate releases a bill this week.
