Passage of the reconciliation bill is a devastating blow to the health and safety of everyday people, accountability comes next

The House of Representatives passed the reconciliation package. This codifies catastrophic cuts to health (Medicaid) and nutrition (SNAP) programs among other harms.

Washington, D.C., July 3, 2025—The House of Representatives passed a version of the reconciliation package today that guts programs supporting basic needs. Overwhelming grassroots advocacy demonstrated that everyday people oppose this catastrophic legislation. RESULTS joins its partners in vowing to hold lawmakers accountable.

“The harm caused by this legislation will play out for years and generations to come,” said RESULTS Executive Director, Joanne Carter. “Birth in the U.S. will be even more dangerous and deadly, so too will being a child. Children have lost out most of all. Nearly half of all U.S. children receive healthcare through Medicaid, starting with their births. Cuts and new work requirements will rip away this coverage. 15 million children access their food through SNAP. First-ever work requirements for their parents will leave millions of children hungry where work is hard to find. The cost sharing thrust onto states will reduce access even more. This new Child Tax Credit cruelly excludes the children and families who need it most to meet basic needs.”

“It does not escape us that children are also the group furthest from the halls of power. They remain entirely at the mercy of adult authority, and today Congress showed them none. This policy has betrayed the youngest in our midst. Congress bankrupted their future to concentrate wealth at the top.”

“Congress heard loud and clear from RESULTS advocates coast to coast that this bill contravenes the will of the people. Rural communities have sounded the alarm on its decimating effects on elder care. Families already struggling to make ends meet will now have no recourse in caring for their aging loved ones,” continued Carter.

“Passing this harmful bill is a watershed moment. The social compact between communities and their government is in tatters. It marks the end of any remaining trust that Congress enacts the will of the people. This moment must mark the beginning of accountability. RESULTS applauds and stands with the brave lawmakers who took all possible steps to stop this legislative travesty. We thank you for listening to your constituents and acting on their behalf.”

“The outcome of this vote will not dissuade us. We vow to continue engaging legislators at an unprecedented level. The movement to end poverty will build in such strength and scale as to drown out the influences that led so many lawmakers to support this destructive path. We will not forget, and we will not back down from our vision of a future beyond poverty and oppression.”
