Once again, in 2022, RESULTS proved that our voices have power. Advocates from all 50 states, with support from donors in just as many, raised their voices for a more equitable, just, and healthy world. With pandemic restrictions ending, our passionate volunteers and staff reentered the halls of Congress and demanded action: to alleviate child poverty and the growing affordable housing crisis in the United States and to accelerate progress in health, nutrition, and education in the world’s most vulnerable communities. We’re pleased to share our results.
A message from RESULTS’ executive director and board chair
The world is facing a cascade of crises — from the continued fall-out from the COVID 19 pandemic to increased hunger and food insecurity, rising costs and mounting debt, and worsening climate change — and the burden of these crises falls most heavily on the most impoverished and marginalized communities. Our response has been to engage actively in our democracy, building political support for equitable and effective solutions that match the scale of need and are informed by those most affected. Thanks to the dedication of our advocates, staff, and partners, and the generous support of individuals and foundations, RESULTS continues to have remarkable impact. Together, we have brought hope to millions of people who are better able to take care of their own and their families’ needs — and to advocates across the U.S. who have realized their power to effect change.
In this report, you’ll read about several of our 2022 successes, such as the passage of the Global Malnutrition Prevention and Treatment Act, which could help save millions of lives. Malnutrition is the underlying cause of half of all preventable deaths of children under five. The act helps to ensure that the United States does its part to prevent these unnecessary deaths and does it as effectively as possible. This victory did not happen on its own. From 2020 to 2022, there were nearly 17,000 pieces of legislation introduced in Congress and only 1% were directly signed into law. But RESULTS advocates and allies pushed hard to generate the political leadership to address malnutrition, and the overwhelming majority of Congress voted in support of this legislation.
We’re also proud of the work RESULTS advocates have done to educate members of Congress about the Child Tax Credit (CTC) and press them to extend its full benefits to the lowest-income Americans. At the beginning of 2022, 19 million children in the lowest-income families became ineligible for the full Child Tax Credit after Congress let temporary expansions expire. The expanded CTC nearly halved child poverty in 2021, yet the very families who need this income boost most are now being left out. RESULTS advocates are among the most engaged grassroots constituents in the country urging Congress to extend full CTC benefits to families who currently earn too little to qualify for the much-needed credit. Thanks to our efforts, bipartisan support for expanding the Child Tax Credit is growing and we’re building on this work in 2023.
Throughout RESULTS’ 2022 campaigns, while our staff worked behind the scenes, our nationwide network of volunteers were out front, pushing their representatives to support proven and sustainable solutions to poverty, inequality, and economic injustice. We are grateful for the tremendous work they’ve done — and continue to do — day in and day out through difficult times to build political support for policies and funding that could save and transform lives. We are just as grateful for the financial supporters whose philanthropic funding allows us to do this critical work. Your generosity made everything you’ll read about in this report possible. Thank you.

Throughout 2022, RESULTS staff and volunteer advocates took strategic actions to educate and mobilize policymakers and the public about often life-and-death issues that too rarely get the front-page coverage and urgent response they deserve. Read highlights of the incredible impact these actions had — thanks to donor support.
RESULTS played a key role in securing a historic pledge from the Biden Administration of $6 billion over three years for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The commitment helped to inspire pledges from other donors for a total of $15.7 billion by year’s end toward the goal of saving 20 million lives over three years. Read Joanne Carter’s first-hand account of the pledging conference in New York City.
RESULTS pulled out all the stops to demand an end to child poverty after Congress let temporary expansions to the Child Tax Credit expire at the end of 2021. In over 300 congressional meetings; in calls, emails, and letters to Congress; and in nearly one published media piece a day, our advocates kept economic justice for families front and center despite the ever-shifting political winds — building crucial bipartisan support for future success.
In the midst of rising global hunger and malnutrition, RESULTS supported the successful passage of lifesaving legislation and funding. Wins included $5 billion for global food and nutrition security and humanitarian assistance in response to the crisis created by the war in Ukraine, a pledge of $200 million from the US Agency for International Development (its largest ever) to treat up to 2.4 million severely malnourished children, and the passage of the Global Malnutrition Prevention and Treatment Act.
In 2022, we welcomed more than 200 new volunteer advocates to our nationwide network. These activists enthusiastically joined our trainings and bravely took actions to create a more equitable world, from writing letters to the editor in support of more effective policies to speaking with their representatives. For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began, waves of RESULTS’ volunteers from across the country traveled to Washington, DC, to meet face-to-face with members of Congress and their staff.
Thanks to donor support, we were able to bring RESULTS advocates to the nation’s capital at strategic times in the legislative process. We are grateful to all those who helped ensure that financial circumstances weren’t a barrier for volunteers who made the journey and for making our ongoing outreach and organizing efforts possible.
Maurice Gayetay was one of nearly 100 advocates who traveled to Capitol Hill to meet with their congressional offices on a Tuesday in June. COVID restrictions made things difficult but not even a meeting in the rain stopped Maurice from sharing his passion for ending poverty.
In her first-ever meeting on Capitol Hill, Alexis Hicks asked her senator to support an initiative close to her heart: preventing, treating, and ending the pandemics of poverty through the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
Temporary COVID relief programs like monthly Child Tax Credit payments helped keep Clara Moore and her daughter from becoming homeless. The RESULTS Expert on Poverty argued for a return of the expanded program to give children the best chance in life.
“As a donor, I get far more from RESULTS than what I give.”
