RESULTS Weekly Update November 8, 2022

November 8, 2022

Quote of the Week

“Extending the expanded Child Tax Credit would alleviate all of those problems for the key to the nation’s future — its children. Shame on members of Congress if they adjourn for the holidays without first taking care of their most important priority.”

– November 6 editorial in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, generated by November RESULTS National Webinar guest speaker Jeff Gerritt

It’s Election Day – please vote!

The day that has been discussed, analyzed, advertised, and waited for is finally here. It’s Election Day! The day Americans get to exercise one of our most precious rights – the right to vote. Our democracy depends on it. When we vote, we use our power to choose the kind of country we want to live in. If we don’t, we give that power to others. Use yours today!

TAKE ACTION: If you have not voted already, please make sure to vote before polls close today in your area. To confirm your registration and voting location, vote to www.vote.org. Also, share that you voted with people you know and remind them to vote too.

Help us get 100 media pieces on the CTC and TB this month

After today, the last few weeks of legislative quiet will seem like a faded memory. Things in Washington will speed up fast, with members of Congress returning next week to start finishing their work for the year.

For RESULTS, that work must include two important tasks – passing the End TB Now Act and expanding Child Tax Credit (CTC). With tuberculosis, this should be easy. The bill does not ask for new money. It mandates targeted allocation of existing TB treatment and prevention resources to countries and communities who need it most. It also mandates accountability to Congress for the effectiveness of TB programs.

On the CTC, it’s about repeating the history made last year. In 2021, the expanded CTC monthly payments helped cut child poverty nearly in half. Now with child poverty on the rise and inflation straining family budgets, it must be brought back. Congress wants to pass a bill with tax breaks for corporations this year. They must include a CTC expansion in that bill.

With Congress in and out of Washington this month, grassroots media is key to getting their attention. We’ve set a goal of getting 100 media pieces on the CTC and/or TB published this month. That will make it hard for lawmakers to ignore.

TAKE ACTION: Submit letters to the editor telling Congress pass the End TB Now Act and an expansion of the CTC. Our November Action Sheets have background and talking points for letters on both issues. Writing your own personalized letter will increase your chances of getting published. If you are short on time, use the media templates in our Action Center to edit and send your letters. Finally, please be sure to listen to the recording of last weekend’s National Webinar. Thank you to Jeff Gerritt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, who shared invaluable insights on how best to get letters and op-eds published in your local paper (he even published this editorial on the CTC the next day). The webinar also includes a brief media training. If you need help, please contact Jos Linn at [email protected].

Invite people to our special post-election webinar

On November 17, RESULTS is hosting a special, post-election webinar called “What’s next in the fight against poverty?” At this event, you’ll hear how the 2022 election results will impact our work to end poverty. We’ll also discuss key actions you can take right now to move our agenda forward.

This event is designed for current advocates, new advocates, people who have never heard of RESULTS, and people brand new to advocacy. Invite people you know!

We have a guide to help you with a script and templates for invitations and follow-up. Share the invitation with friends, family, colleagues, and leads. If you know them, invite them. The more people we have in this movement, the stronger our collective power and influence will be.

TAKE ACTION: Register for and invite people to our special, post-election webinar “What’s next in the fight against poverty?” on Thursday, November 17 at 8:30 pm ET. This is a fantastic opportunity to hear what the new Congress might do on RESULTS’ policy priorities. You’ll also get to take action on our two of our issues before Congress right now – child poverty and global health. Get energized and motivated to move our agenda forward! The webinar is. Register for the webinar and then use our guide to invite people you know to attend.
