What RESULTS Volunteers Do

May 26, 2009

Hi, my name is Lillian Gu. I am a RESULTS activist in the Research Triangle group in Chapel Hill, North Carolina

As you’ve just seen with the story about the Oklahoma Miracle, the hard work of RESULTS activists can make great things happen. Now I’d like to tell you a little bit about how RESULTS chapters work.

RESULTS has chapters in more than 100 cities throughout the U.S. Outside the U.S., we have chapters in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Mexico, and Japan.

The staff members of RESULTS know that it is our volunteers who make the organization effective. So, they do all they can to support us in our advocacy work.

For example, my  group leader stays informed by our regional coordinator and staff, and staff members are happy to get on the phone with me to explain things or guide me in taking action. I also receive great, weekly information about progress being made on our poverty campaigns and actions I need to take. In return, RESULTS asks activists to do the following five things:

Number one: Attend the national conference call each month. For those who have never attended a RESULTS conference call, I’ll explain how it works. On the second Saturday of each month, RESULTS activists throughout the country meet with their local chapters, and dial into a national phone call. This call features expert guests, including leaders in Congress. We also get updates on RESULTS activities and share grassroots successes. If you are unable to attend the conference call, we ask that you listen to a recording of the call on our website.

Number two: Meet a second time each month with your local group. This meeting gives partners a chance to share ideas, coordinate their activities, and practice speaking about the issues.

Number three: Stay in touch with your group leader during the month.

Number four: Contribute a minimum of $35 per year to RESULTS and/or RESULTS Educational Fund. Because RESULTS is a non-profit organization, we ask that you support our work financially. You may be interested to learn that it costs over $1,000 per year for RESULTS to support each local chapter through conference calls, direct staff support, and materials.

Number five: Help your local group host public outreach meetings during the year. Much of RESULTS’ success comes from getting new people involved. Outreach programs help us find new activists, and educate the public on issues of poverty. And many RESULTS partners find these programs a great way to practice their public speaking skills.

We’re glad you’ve decided to become part of an inspiring tradition. We’re honored by your partnership.

I’d like to leave you with a quote from Apollo astronaut Rusty Schweikart:

“We aren’t passengers on spaceship Earth, we’re the crew. We aren’t residents on this planet, we’re citizens. The difference in both cases is responsibility.”
