U.S. Poverty Campaigns

Weekly Update | November 27, 2018

“Anyone can change who we are if we have the support. You work on bad things, bad things will happen. You put in the work to do good things, and good things are going to come to you. This is proof of that.”

–  RESULTS Expert on Poverty Kimberly Trigg of Kansas on being a Woman of Achievement honoree (from a November 8 article in the Salina Journal)

Got Two Minutes? Give to RESULTS on This Giving Tuesday!

Today is #GivingTuesday, one of the biggest charitable days of the year. We’ve set a goal to raise $7,500 today to help reach the more than 90 new members of Congress and commit them to ending poverty. To help reach this goal, all donations to RESULTS will be matched 2:1 until midnight tonight, November 27! The impact of your donations to RESULTS are always multiplied through the power of advocacy. But this Giving Tuesday your support will go even further. Thanks to our gift-tripling match, each dollar you donate will lead to at least $300 in funding to fight poverty!

TAKE ACTION: Take two minutes to make #GivingTuesday a success by donating to RESULTS by midnight tonight. Your gift will be match 2:1, thus tripling the benefit to RESULTS. In addition, if you donate to a fellow volunteer’s Virtual Thanksgiving Feast page today, your donation will count toward the #GivingTuesday match.

Share with your friends to help reach our goal. Send them our new video and urge them to support the work of RESULTS!

Got Ten Minutes? Plan for Next Week’s National Webinar

Join us for the RESULTS December 2018 U.S. Poverty National Webinar next Tuesday, December 4 at 8:00 pm ET. We will look ahead to the new Congress starting in January and how to make affordable housing – a new issue for RESULTS – a priority with lawmakers. We’ll review your great successes from 2018 and hear inspiring stories from the grassroots. Make your plans to join us for this last webinar of the year.

TAKE ACTION: Take ten minutes to prepare for the RESULTS U.S. Poverty National Webinar next Tuesday, December 4 at 8:00 pm ET by confirming your plans for it this week. If your group is meeting together for the webinar, let them know when and where you will. If you are not meeting together, remind people to join on their own at: https://results.zoom.us/j/873308801 (they can also dial in by phone at either (929) 436-2866 or (669) 900-6833, Meeting ID: 873 308 801). The slides for the webinar will be available next Tuesday on our National Webinars page. If you have questions or need help, please contact Jos Linn.

Note that, because the first Tuesday in January is New Year’s Day, our January webinar will be on Tuesday, January 8.

Got Twenty Minutes? Talk to New Volunteers and Lawmakers (Post-Election Action)

How are you planning to spend the last month of 2018? Of course, there will be holiday activities in abundance – enough to last us until next year. However, in the midst of all the craziness of this time of year, there are also windows to do something more. Something special.

First, you can inspire someone. Think about the first time you felt that surge of adrenaline after a call to an aide or a published letter to the editor or lobby meeting with your member of Congress. That rush didn’t come from something outside of you – it came from the realization that you can do more than you thought you could. That’s a great feeling, and one meant to be shared.

Second, you can educate newly-elected members of Congress. Nearly 100 federal lawmakers are in new member orientations in DC this week and Boston next week. That leaves the weeks of December 10 and 17 as your best opportunities to meet with them and educate them on our issues before they get to work.

TAKE ACTION: Take twenty minutes to reach out potential new volunteers and lawmakers. Here’s what to do:

“Are you ready to make a difference?” We are still only a few weeks out from the election and while some of the excitement of it has faded, the impetus of it has not. As you know, the election is just the first step. If people want to see the change they hope for, they have to push for it. You know how to do that. Reach out to people you know and tell them about RESULTS. Ask them if they are ready to make a difference in the world and then show them how. See our Post-Election Action for guidance and contact Jos Linn with any questions.

“Congratulations! Here’s what I’d like to discuss.” Reach out to new and returning members of Congress to see if you can meet with them before they get sworn in on January 3. For new members, visit their campaign pages for contact information and leverage contacts you know from their campaign. For returning members, use the same procedure you’ve used previously get meetings. Personalize our updated meeting request (online or Word doc) to ask for your meetings (if you need help, please contact Jos Linn). Also, in the next week, look for talking points for your meetings in the Post-Election Action.

Keep Pushing Back Against New Public Charge Rule

The deadline to submit your public comment opposing the Trump Administration’s harsh new public charge rule is fast approaching. You have until Monday, December 10. So far, there have been 84,000 comments submitted (most but not all opposing it). Keep the momentum going by helping us hit 100,000 comments before the deadline and build as much opposition to the rule as possible.

TAKE ACTION: Go to www.protectingimmigrantfamilies.org to submit your personal comment and please remind others you know to comment too. Once you have submitted your comment, share the link with others you know and urge them to comment as well. You can also draw attention to the issue by submitting a letter to the editor opposing the new rule (RESULTS volunteers have gotten over 40 media pieces on this issue already). Finally, the is a bi-partisan House sign-on letter urging the Trump Administration to rescind the new rule. If you have the time, forward it to your representative’s office and urge them to sign on in support of this effort.
