U.S. Poverty Campaigns

Weekly Update | November 22, 2016

“Imagine looking into your children’s eyes and explaining that you have no place to go, nothing to eat, and no money — again. My kids know the reality of homelessness and hunger — the truths of sleeping in a car for heat and being so hungry that sleep is the only respite. I long for the reality that many believe to be completely ordinary, a moment in which my kids see their new home, with food on the table. For us, it would be extraordinary, but the tax credit helps make it possible.”

– RESULTS Expert on Poverty Asia Bijan Thompson in her November 12 letter to the editor in the Scranton Times-Tribune

Got Two Minutes? Do a Quick Follow-Up with Outreach Webinar Guests (November Action)

We know you have limited time this week, so we’ll keep our suggested actions to a minimum. Thank you to everyone who participated in the RESULTS National Outreach Webinar last week with Dr. Maya Rockeymoore of the Center for Global Policy Solutions. Let’s make the most of this event!

TAKE ACTION: Here are some quick steps to follow up with those who attended the webinar (or who didn’t, but expressed interest):

  1. Thank them for coming. Give them a call, mail a note, send a personal e-mail thanking any new people for coming to your event. People always appreciate a thank you, which shows that you value their participation. Ask if they have questions about the webinar, RESULTS, or your local group. If you invited new people to listen on their own, be sure to follow up with them as well.
  2. Invite them to take action. Let them know that their voice matters by inviting them to take an action through the website, such as writing members of Congress about expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit (http://capwiz.com/results/issues/alert/?alertid=9823986&MC_plugin=2201). Also, urge them to sign up for a Weekly Updates to stay up-to-date on our work (http://capwiz.com/results/mlm/signup/).
  3. Invite them to your next meeting. Keep new people engaged by inviting them to your next RESULTS meeting. In fact, our December National Webinar would be a good event for them to attend. This will be a joint webinar with RESULTS U.S. Poverty and Global volunteers. We’ll celebrate successes in 2016, hear stories from the grassroots, and look ahead to 2017. This will be an excellent opportunity for them to get to know RESULTS better. The webinar is Saturday, December 10 at 2:00 pm ET. Join online at http://fuze.me/32255914 or by phone at (201) 479-4595, Meeting ID: 32255914#.

Have friends who didn't make it? Share the recording, summary, and slides from our Outreach Webinar page.

Got a Few More Minutes? Request Meetings with New or Re-Elected Members of Congress (November Action)

The threats to anti-poverty programs in 2017 are substantial (and there are perhaps some opportunities too), and it will be critical that we educate lawmakers about the importance of these programs and push back against attempts to undermine them. The best way to send that message is to meet with them face-to-face as soon as possible.

TAKE ACTION: Take time to submit face-to-face meeting requests for next month or early 2017. Find the scheduler names for your House and Senate members on our Elected Officials page and call or e-mail them with a request for a meeting. Use our online form to write your request letter. If you have a new member of Congress starting in 2017, start with their campaign website to find their contact information. They may not have staff yet, but be persistent in requesting a meeting. If you need help with scheduling meetings, please contact Jos Linn ([email protected]). Once you get a meeting scheduled, please contact Meredith Dodson ([email protected]) to help you prepare and share resources for your meeting.
