Set up lobby meetings to talk about FY27 priorities
As outlined on the February National Webinar, Congress is pivoting to start work on the fiscal year 2027 (FY27) budget. Considering the delay in finalizing FY26, the process will move quickly. That’s why it is essential we meet with lawmakers and staff now to talk about our FY27 U.S. and global poverty priorities. Housing, nutrition, education, global health, and vaccines are all on the agenda. Your lobby meetings will remind lawmakers why these investments are critical in the fight against poverty.
As we launch into our 2026 year, “Building a Better Future,” please contact schedulers to set up lobby meetings in February and March. Personalize our sample meeting request email and send it as soon as possible. Ideally, you want to meet with your representatives and senators in-person or virtually. If you are not able meet with them, schedule a meeting with local staff (and ask DC aides to join virtually).
The goal is to outline your legislative priorities and build a relationship with staff. The budget process is a months-long endeavor. Developing a rapport with staff is integral, as you will be in contact with them throughout the year (and hopefully meet some of them in-person at the RESULTS National Conference).
Our “Building a Better Future” page has all the resources to schedule and plan your lobby meetings. Lobby “leave-behinds” to give aides, laser talks to help you talk about the issues, and other helpful resources are there to help you. Also, the February National Webinar provides a great overview of the congressional appropriations process and FY27 priorities. It is a great resource. Finally, when you get a lobby meeting scheduled, please contact Katie Fleischer ([email protected]) to schedule a lobby prep meeting with RESULTS staff. These prep calls will make your planning easier and your meetings more successful.
Thank members of Congress for supporting our priorities
While you schedule lobby meetings, help grease the skids for your FY27 requests. As noted over the last few weeks, the final FY26 budget was an extraordinary success. After a year of the Trump Administration’s running roughshod over the budget process, Congress finally pushed back. Instead of following the President’s desire to slash programs, Congress maintained critical funding for health care, housing, education, and nutrition. Your advocacy made this possible. And your advocacy can set us up for more success in FY27.
Tell your members of Congress how grateful you are they maintained vital investments in the FY26 budget. Reach out to House and Senate foreign policy aides today. If your members of Congress (MoC) signed a global Dear Colleague letter or pushed leaders behind the scenes to fund these priorities, please thank them. If your MoC didn’t do much, let them know the FY26 budget is a good foundation to build on. To help you, use these talking points to draft your personalized email and reach out to RESULTS staff if you have questions. Thank you!
TL;DR (too long; didn’t read): Register for the RESULTS National Conference in July. Begin booking lobby meetings to bring our FY27 priorities to Congress. And thank members of Congress for maintaining crucial anti-poverty priority support in the FY26 budget.
