Rep. Adam Smith to Speak on National Conference Call This Saturday, September 10

Rep. Adam Smith knows the value of well-orchestrated foreign assistance for our nations security, economy, and global leadership. He is an initial cosponsor of the Education for All Act of 2011 and he respects RESULTS for knowing how to do advocacy well. Gather a group of activists and dial in this Saturday at 2pm to (888) 409-6709. Rep. Smith, staff, and activist will prepare everyone on the call to take the next steps on Education for All.

Top Action This Week: Senate Sign-On Letter Needs Your Senators’ Support

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria stated in their 2010 progress report, “If the momentum of the last decade is maintained and countries continue to scale up programs at the current rate, malaria could be eliminated as a public health problem in most endemic countries and indeed there would be hope for a world without malaria deaths by 2015…And it might be possible to virtually eliminate transmission of HIV from mothers to their children.”

The big “if” is: will we maintain momentum? Momentum depends upon whether we have the political will to continue funding and scaling up the things we know work.

Senator Gillibrand of New York is circulating a sign-on letter to the heads of the Appropriations Committee asking them to increase funding for PEPFAR and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria so that we can continue making progress on these diseases. The U.S. made a pledge of $4 billion over three years. We need to make sure that we keep that promise.

  1. Use our action alert to call your senators about signing on to the Gillibrand letter. The action alert will provide you with the words to say. Give it a try. It’s not hard, but it is powerful.
  2. If you want to take a more powerful action, call the your senators’ offices and make your request directly with the foreign policy aide.

We Need Media and 100 Cosponsors of the Education for All Act

We are one month into a three-month campaign to get the U.S. to commit funding to the Global Partnership for Education (the multilateral formerly known as the Fast Track Initiative or FTI). We’ve set goals of generating 100 cosponsors on the bipartisan Education for All Act of 2011 (EFA Act, H.R.2705) by October 1. And we’ve set media targets of 12 editorials, 12 op-eds, and 70 letters to the editor by the end of October. We need your help to hit our targets. Here are your tools:

  1. Action Alerts: Send a letter or make a call to your representative’s office on the EFA Act of 2011.
  2. Call the foreign policy aide in your representative’s office and use our EFA laser talk to make a even more powerful request.
  3. Write a letter to the editor using our online tool.
  4. Use our editorial packet to write an op-ed or to make a request for your local paper to write an editorial.
  5. Organize an outreach event in your community using our resources (scroll down to the bottom section).

Every email, call, letter, and face-to-face encounter matters! Every piece of media matters! Every person you educate matters. If you need support taking the next action, contact a group leader, regional coordinator, or staff member. You an also share ideas with fellow partners in our website forum.
