The Global Fund Needs Our Support: December Action Sheet and Media

Media pieces are still coming in from our World AIDS Day push, and this is outstanding news, as we know the need to highlight AIDS doesn’t end just because World AIDS Day has come and gone. As we work to compile all the fabulous work you’ve done on that push, we look to how we can continue to put the end of AIDS front and center. Recent news about the cancellation of round 11 of grant proposals for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria have underscored the importance of our work; the United States must be kept accountable for its philosophical and financial pledge to both the Global Fund and, more broadly, the end of the AIDS pandemic.

If you didn’t write that World AIDS Day letter you intended to submit, take this month’s action sheet as an opportunity to write about the end of AIDS and voice your support for the Global Fund. The action sheet will give you the information and structure you need to submit a personal, powerful letter. Let’s keep the media push going, as we know it will make a difference.

Don’t Miss the Final National Conference Call of the Year!

Dr. Seth Berkley, CEO of GAVI Alliance, will be our December 10 conference call guest! Knowing how important our childhood vaccines work has been to us and to the world this year, having Seth with us on the call will be an inspiring way to end the year. Gather your group and join us by calling in at 2 pm ET to (888) 409-6709.

You won’t want to miss this call. Dr. Joanne Carter, our executive director, will join with grassroots to bring reflections on our year, and we will get set to continue our work on HIV/AIDS as anticipate our 2012 International Conference that will synchronize with the International AIDS Conference (taking place in the U.S. for the first time in approximately two decades).

President Obama Speaks About the Nation’s Commitment to Ending AIDS

President Obama’s World AIDS Day commitment — to increase the number of people receiving antiretroviral HIV therapy (ART) through U.S. programs from 4 to 6 million by 2013, including providing ART to 1.5 million pregnant women — is a crucial step toward ending AIDS. But we must keep going. Read Executive Director Joanne Carter’s recent statement on the president’s World AIDS Day remarks and what’s next for end-of-AIDS advocacy.

More Inspiring Fundraising News

This is an important week for grassroots fundraising as we completed our final fundraising events of 2011! Thank you to the Kitsap/Bremerton group in Washington State and Anchorage, Alaska, wrapping us up in style. Kitsap partners hosted a mexican buffet lunch where Dr. Ernest Loevinsohn, director of global health policy and advocacy at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and past RESULTS board chair, spoke about the value of inexpensive vaccinations and medications in saving millions of lives and the role that RESULTS plays in making them available worldwide. With 191 participants, they’ve raised $24,000 so far. Congratulations and thanks also to our Anchorage group who hosted an intimate house party fundraiser to share their passion for TB issues with their friends and invite them to contribute to ending TB with us.

Lastly, if you are a runner or have a January birthday, our fundraising team would love for you to take our new online fundraising tool for a spin in January! If you’d like to run a 5K or are willing to celebrate your age to inspire your friends to contribute to RESULTS and RESULTS Educational Fund, contact Cindy Levin to find out more.

We can beat this disease. We can win this fight. We just have to keep at it, steady, persistent — today, tomorrow, every day. . . .
