Take Action – Write Your Local Paper About Support for Gavi

The Gift of Gavi: Have YOU Been Published Yet?

Congress may be powering down for 2014, but our support for global immunizations continues until the late January replenishment in Berlin. First and foremost, there are still media opportunities to grab hold of. Have you gotten published yet? Why wait? The holidays are the perfect time to submit a hope-filled Gavi piece.

Thanks to your hard work, we've broken the 120-pieces mark. Letters to the editor, opeds, editorials . . . let's not stop now!

Got 30 Minutes? Use the new December Action Sheet to write and submit an oped or letter to the editor on Gavi. At this hopeful time of year, writers and editors will be looking for fresh ways to highlight the spirit of the season. What could be more uplifting than an opportunity to save the lives of children around the world? So seize the opportunity.

Got 15 Minutes? Check out these great media pitching do's and don't's from Deseret News Senior Editorial Columnist Jay Evensen. Ask the editor of your local newspaper to write about Gavi. Let him/her know that one of the best ways to provide protection from diseases like Ebola is to help poor nations strengthen their healthcare systems, which Gavi does. Send them this great, short background document. Learn more about working with editors on our website.

Got 10 Minutes? Engage your action network, friends, family, and colleagues who want to support you and our child vaccine work in writing letters to the editor. Use our handy online tool – share it via e-mail/Facebook/Twitter and follow up with those you know are taking action to see how it went and if they got published. If you want ideas, draw from media other volunteers have already generated.

Got 5 Minutes? Think about how a grasstops person of influence in your community (pediatrician, nurse, etc.) could partner with you to co-write a powerful op-ed on Gavi. There's nothing like local expert voices breaking down the issues and helping it hit home.

Make sure your community is talking about global immunizations – and send copies of the media you generate to your legislators.

Gavi Advocacy with Congress: Yes, Virginia! There's More We Can Do!

While the House has finished its work for the 113th Congress, the Senate remains at work for a few more days. What does this mean for our legislative opportunities around Gavi?

First, take advantage of the opportunities left for this congressional period:

  • Participate in a nationwide Gavi call-in to the White House this week! Adapt this sample call script and use a special designated number to make your call before the weekend – (888) 869-8931.

Hello, my name is _____, and I am calling from_____. I would like to ask President Obama to help save 6 million children's lives by pledging 1 billion dollars over the next four years to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The U.S. needs to make good on its promise to end preventable childhood death by making a bold investment at the Gavi pledging conference in January. I care about this issue because ___.

  • Members of the Senate can still cosponsor S.Res. 578 and add to the 18 senators currently signed on. To request Senate resolution cosponsors, go to our online action alert.
  • Members of either the House or Senate can still write President Obama and voice support for strong Gavi replenishment in 2015. To request that your legislators write President Obama, check out this additional action alert.

Second, call now to book a face-to-face meeting with the legislators who will be in office in your district and state beginning in 2014. Let Gavi be on their radar early in the session. Remember – new and returning members of Congress will be filling the start of the 2014 schedule with meetings of some kind. Why not make one of those meetings a RESULTS meeting on the power of Gavi? Find your legislators through our website, or contact Lisa Marchal, Senior Global Grassroots Associate, if you have questions on how to reach a new incoming legislator.
