Quote of the Week

"I am very passionate about ensuring that voices of marginalized communities are heard in the political system. I was really inspired to become an advocate when a mentor of mine told me that I had to use my voice. It was time that I stood up and showed up to be heard."

– Manilan Houle, former RESULTS REAL Change Fellow

World AIDS Day: New Resources for Action-taking, Hill Briefing on TB, Chance for Outreach

We’ve done some amazing this work this year. One of our biggest accomplishments was the advocacy we did to get the Obama Administration to make a pledge of $4.3 billion to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. You generated nearly 100 pieces of media and got 36 senators (of both parties) to sign on to a letter to the Administration. These efforts and others by our partners around the globe led to a successful replenishment conference with pledges coming in at $12.9 billion. If donors keep their word, these funds will prevent 300 million infections and save an additional 8 million lives by 2020. Great work!

What's next? As you know, Congress is responsible for appropriating these funds each year, and we have a new Congress and administration. Let’s use World AIDS Day to call on our newly elected Congress to follow through on the US commitment.

1. Use our new World AIDS Day Action Sheet and editorial packet to empower yourself and others to write their local papers and request that our Global Fund pledge be made to stick in 2017!

2. Invite your members of Congress and their aides to a December 6 Hill Briefing on TB, co-sponsored by RESULTS and spear-headed by our friends at the National TB Controllers Association. Download and share this invitation today!

3. Connect with your community. Now is the time to prepare for the opportunities of a new congress and president in 2017 and invite others to be part of it all. Connect with your Regional Coordinater as well as Mark Campbell, Global Health Associate, for support with your event including tabling materials requests and a mini-grant application. You can even explore our online outreach resources (scroll down page).

All set with your event idea? Then start inviting! Use our laser talk and last month's general outreach support action sheet to make your invitations personal. Then use our November action sheet to write out personal invitations. You can even use this link to set up a free VolunteerMatch ad for your event.

Education for All Act: There's a Bit More Time to Act

Before this Congress heads home at the end of the year, they have a chance to make a lasting difference in the lives of millions of children. Even in the wake of such a divisive election, the issue of global education brings together members of Congress from both sides of the aisle. By passing the Education for All Act of 2016, lawmakers can move us a step closer to a world where every child has access to the education she deserves. The Education for All Act (S.3256/H.R.4481) requires the U.S. government to develop a comprehensive strategy to improve access to quality education for children and youth in low-income countries. It will address the barriers that right now prevent kids from getting into school and succeeding once they’re there. This bipartisan bill was passed by the House of Representatives earlier this fall. Now it’s the Senate’s turn to take up the legislation.

Use this new November Action Sheet to write a letter to the editor of your local paper and help get this legislation passed!
