Global Poverty Campaigns

Weekly Update | Week of May 16, 2016

Quote of the Week

"Far too often, mothers in the least-developed parts of the world are losing their children to diseases that could have been prevented by vaccinations, adequate nutrition and timely medical care. This can be fixed, however."

– Leslie Weinberg, RESULTS advocate, talking about the Reach Act in the Hartford Courant

The Reach Act: REACH-ing for Victory!

Due to political uncertainty in Brazil, the way forward with the Nutrition for Growth Summit has yet to be determined. So we're redoubling our efforts on making the Reach Act a reality.

Now is the time for representatives and senators to encourage the leadership of the House Foreign Affairs and Senator Foreign Relations Committees to work on the Reach Act. Media is making the case, and you've almost placed media in every state in the nation. Cosponsors are increasing the drumbeat of support. It's time for congressional leadership to act!

How can you call on congressional leadership to show the courage moms and kids deserve?

Check out these resources on our maternal/child health issue page as well as on our media toolkit page

Our Reach Act Quarter 2 (April-June) goals: 150 cosponsors and 15 new Republicans. So far we have 138 cosponsors, including the lead (57 Republicans) and 10 new Republicans. Let's knock it out of the park these next six weeks by calling for action in the media!

Hotel Deadline Coming Up: 2016 RESULTS International Conference

The International Conference is an opportunity to learn and connect, but also to move the needle on our issues and deepen relationships. Come to the 2016 International Conference and help us push the Reach Act toward passage as well as support replenishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria at the September 16 replenishment meeting in Canada. Meet the powerful schedulers in the offices of your representatives and senators in person. Then land that in-district or in-state meeting back home, too. Come and change the world!

1. May 26 is the Hotel Deadline. After this date, unbooked conference-rate rooms will be released back to the hotel. Book today!

2. Financial Assistance Available. Learning, connecting, making change, having fun, making memories. Reporting on Our New Year's Resolution: Getting RESULTS in All 50 States!

In January, as we were busy setting our New Year’s Resolutions, your RESULTS Global Expansion Team was eagerly envisioning where we want to be by the end of 2016 and setting our own bold goals for growing the RESULTS family. We set a challenging but achievable goal of having a RESULTS global group in all 50 states by the end of 2016. This meant hard work building new groups in 14 states over 12 months.

While many resolutions tend to be short lived, these are not goals that we have given up on. Through hard work, outreach, relationship building, and face time at high impact conferences, we’re happy to report we’re well on our way to making this happen! As we approach the middle of the year, RESULTS Global Expansion staff are supporting new groups or developing new leads in 9 of the 14 new target states. And you can help us meet our big goal! Check out the opportunities to help on our blog.

Road to Rio Fundraising Challenge

Recently RESULTS Executive Director Joanne Carter sent an email inviting all of you to join our Road to Rio Fundraising Challenge. We hope you have all signed up for this exciting campaign! The money we raise will benefit the advocacy work we are already doing. This campaign is a fun and easy way for us to all be fundraisers and celebrate the global collaboration of the 2016 Summer Olympics being held in Rio de Janeiro. This is the first time we are coordinating with RESULTS affiliates in the UK and Canada on a collective fundraising effort. You can get started by setting up your personal friends and family page here: https://friendraising.donorpro.com/campaigns/322If you need help setting up a page, contact Grassroots Fundraising Associate Jen DeFranco

What's more, through the incredible generosity of one of our board members and his family, we have the chance to leverage your fundraising even further. Between now and June 26, if we collectively raise $35,000 through the Road to Rio Fundraising Challenge, an additional $15,000 contribution will be donated.

Board Election & Bob Dickerson Award

1. RESULTS & RESULTS Educational Fund is looking to fill one grassroots board position to serve a term of three (3) years beginning in July of 2016. (There are four grassroots board seats in total.) Grassroots board members represent the volunteer body on the Board of Directors and on the Executive Committee of the Board. It is the responsibility of the Board of Directors to work with the Executive Director in shaping the direction of RESULTS, advising on major policies for the organization, and providing fiduciary oversight. The Executive Committee of the Board is the primary governing body of the organization. Members meet frequently by conference call and are in communication via e-mail and telephone calls. Members must be able to participate at this level and are expected to chair or serve on a Board Committee(s) as well as participate in fundraising for the organization. Grassroots board members play a particular role in representing grassroots perspectives on the board.

Our grassroots board candidates include Tadeo Melean Weiner (Kansas City U.S. poverty group), Maxine Thomas (Indianapolis U.S. poverty group) and Charles Wallace (Austin global poverty group).

You may vote for one candidate. Remember voting ends Tuesday, July 5th at midnight ET. Click here to view candidate bios and statements. After you've reviewed the materials, click here to vote.

2. Bob Dickerson of Seattle was a grassroots advocate with RESULTS for more than 15 years. He was tireless in his advocacy and generous in his financial support. Bob epitomized this the best of what it means to be a grassroots volunteer. You can send your nominations to [email protected] (deadling June 11). In your nomination, tell us who you want to nominate. Include how the volunteer has achieved the mission of RESULTS, why they are a powerful citizen advocate, and how they inspire you.

P.S. And when it comes to inspiration, you can't do better than our founder Sam Daley-Harris. Here's a recent interview he did on The Big Picture!
