Weekly Update | Week of March 21, 2016

Quote of the Week

"The bipartisan Reach Every Mother and Child Act lays out a coordinated and strategic plan to end preventable deaths of moms and children across the world. It is an example of how good things can happen and are happening because people set aside their differences to do what is right for the world."

– Letter to the editor by RESULTS advocate Laura Leslie, Brattleboro Reformer (VT)

World TB Day Outreach and Action

Senate Briefing. You can make a last-minute call to invite your senators and their staff to a tuberculosis-briefing tomorrow (March 23).

  • Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at the Russell Senate Office Building Room 188, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm ET. Lunch will be served. RSVP to: [email protected].

House Briefing. There is still time for you to invite your House members and their staff to a World TB Day House briefing on tuberculosis.

  • Thursday, March 24, 2016 at the B369 Rayburn House Office Building, from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm ET. Please RSVP to Chris Hughes of the American Thoracic Society at [email protected] or at (202) 296-9770.

Webinar. We’ll have two special webinars on March 23 designed to help you have an interesting and informative outreach meeting as we mark World TB Day on March 24.

  • Choose your time – 8 p.m. ET or 9 p.m. ET on March 23. Each webinar will be identical and will last 30 minutes. Each will feature the powerful story of surviving tuberculosis as told by our guests Tony and Karen Corner, new TB eradication ambassadors from Colorado. The webinar will also feature our own David Bryden, our Stop TB Partnership Liaison who will offer insights on where we are in the effort to put the TB epidemic into the history books. Based on your time zone, choose your webinar and work your agenda around it. The webinar portion of the evening could be at the beginning, middle, or end of your gathering. (Need to hold your outreach meeting later? No problem – the webinar(s) will be recorded!)

Appropriations Round-up

The Reach Act: New Goal for June!

150 cosponsors on the House version of the Reach Act before the International Conference, including 15 more Republicans. You've already reached 108 (including the bill's lead)!

The legislation has real bipartisan movement, and we must capitalize on it. Keep up the excellent work, both in the House and in the Senate. (S.1911 has 14 names on the legislation.)  Furthermore, we continue to work to blanket the nation with media on the Reach Act.

Four big ways to advocate:

1. Book meetings with your legislators to discuss the Reach Act and make your requests.

2. Call your representative about the Reach Act. Ask Democrats to bring along a Republican colleague.

3. Or write your senators! Again, ask Democrats to bring along a Republican colleague.

4. Even write your local paper! Have you tweeted out your latest published piece?
