Global Poverty Campaigns

Weekly Update | Week of October 1, 2018

Quote of the Week

"Today’s commitments . . . include a pledge to reach 40 million people with treatment by 2022, a goal to secure $13 billion in annual funding, new commitments from a number of countries, and exciting policy changes from the U.S. government to increase impact and support countries to reach everyone. This is all a hugely positive sign – but a meeting alone guarantees nothing. It’s about what happens starting tomorrow in terms of new funding, smarter policies, and a commitment to equity."

– Dr. Joanne Carter, on the RESULTS blog on the day of the UN High-Level Meeting on Tuberculosis

Quick Action

Take Action: Write Your Local Paper About TB Using New WHO Data

Top Actions: TB Appropriations Work This Week

Use the October Action Sheet and Laser Talk to Support TB Funding. The weather may start to see a chill, but the heat is still on for TB appropriations. Utilize the October Action Sheet and companion laser talk to make the big ask. The U.S. and other global leaders made bold commitments toward ending TB on September 26 at the UN High-Level Meeting on TB. In the spirit of this commitment, ask your member(s) of Congress to speak to the the Chair and Ranking members of the State and Foreign Ops Subcommittees of Appropriations to use the House bilateral TB funding amount of $302 million in the final 2019 spending bill. This is the higher proposed number. The additional funding will save many of lives and send a powerful message to the world about the U.S.'s commitment to reaching 40 million people with TB treatment by 2022. Let the action sheet and laser talk support you in this action.

Do You Have 15 Minutes? Use Those Minutes to Get Published on TB. Take our online action, which includes new, compelling WHO data, and submit your new letter to the editor to your local paper. Only a week has passed since the pivotal September 26 UN High-Level Meeting (HLM) on TB, so media work is timely! Then share the link with a friend or fellow advocate and ask them to do the same.

The Reach Act: Can We Get 16 More Cosponsors?

As of October 3, there are 205 names on the House version of the bill and 48 on the Senate version. Can we reach 218 in House and 50 in the Senate? We are so close! During this crowded time of year, we must continue to push this important legislation to the front, growing the list of cosponsors so that the call for support for this live-saving legislation is loud and clear.

Ask your senator(s) or representative to support maternal and child health by cosponsoring the Reach Act today.

The 2018 Mid-Term Elections: Harness People's Passion

Your work getting our poverty issues in front of candidates signals that we're in it for the long haul. Some of these candidates will transform into legislators, and they will need to continue to hear from us, in our non-partisan manner, on issues of extreme poverty. In a sense, our work is just beginning. Those motivated by these times may be inspired to know there's no expiration date on this level of engagement.

  • Sign up here and Carly Pildis, Senior Associate for Advocacy and Organizing, will reach out to you with opportunities ideas, and training! She can also guide you in training people in your community.
