Global Poverty Campaigns

Weekly Update | Week of November 5, 2018

Quote of the Week

"At RESULTS, we advocate for the issues that are close to my heart, like global health, education, and poverty eradication. I get to talk about issues that I witness throughout my professional and personal life. I can't change the prevailing situation on my own, but I can effect change by raising my voice to those in power."

– Shabina Hussain, RESULTS Advocate in Washington State

SPECIAL POST-ELECTION EDITION OF THE WEEKLY UPDATE

This week's Update is focused simply on two things:

1. A reminder that our National Grassroots Webinar on Saturday, November 10 will focus on the "what now?" of our post-election advocacy. Our special guest will be Jonathan Stivers, Vice President of International Affairs, The Sheridan Group. Mr. Stivers has over two decades of high-level policy experience in the Executive and Legislative Branches specializing in foreign policy, international development, global health, appropriations, trade, export financing, democracy promotion, and human rights. In 2014, Jon was nominated by President Obama to serve as the Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Asia at USAID. In this Senate-confirmed position he managed a budget of approximately $1.2 billion in foreign assistance and led a staff of approximately 1,200 development professionals in 32 countries in East Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia and Central Asia. In the U.S. Congress, Mr. Stivers served as Senior Advisor to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. He played a leadership role on many ground-breaking legislative initiatives including the PEPFAR reauthorization bill and subsequent appropriations that doubled U.S. funding levels for global health in four years, securing emergency relief after the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and passing the JADE Act that tightened sanctions on Burma’s military government. Jon earned a Masters of International Policy and Practice from The Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University and a Bachelor of Arts from James Madison College at Michigan State University in International Relations.
