Global Poverty Campaigns

Weekly Update | Week of May 21, 2018

Quote of the Week

"Rather than feeling wildly ineffective on 10 different issues, find an organization that helps you be profoundly effective on one and trust that others are finding their one. You can click away [online] on the other 10 issues but you are still feeling and being effective on one."

–National Catholic Reporter article entitled, "Sam Daley-Harris' decades of work for civic change embodies citizen activism."

Quick Action

Take Action: Ask Senators & Reps. to Cosponsor and Lead on the Reach Act!

Moving the Reach Act: What to Do When Support Is Not Enough

We are Committed to Passing the Reach Act. The Reach Every Mother and Child Act (H.R.4022, S.1730) will make U.S. efforts on maternal and child health the best they can be through coordination, efficiency, and bold goals. It's time to pass this legislation. We need supporters (cosponsors), but we also need advocates, leaders, and champions in Congress to move this bill. Get senators and representatives to cosponsor the Reach Act, yes, but if they are already cosponsors, move them up the Champion Scale by asking them to advocate for and lead on the issue. Use the Reach Act #LettersGetLOUD Outreach Guide and Action Sheet to mobilize your community. Gather letters for in-district and in-state meetings. You can also bring letters to the International Conference for hand-delivery! Get your senators and representatives to speak to committee leadership, generate media, and call on their colleagues to cosponsor the bills. We need to be bold in our requests and our follow up. Let's do this!

Last Big Moment to Push Congress: The RESULTS International Conference

July may be the last time you can get the undivided attention of Congress. The August recess and November elections will divert their after that. That's why the 2018 RESULTS International Conference (IC), to be held July 14-17, positions us perfectly to have maximum impact. In July we'll push Congress to move the Reach Act, protect funding for global poverty programs, and take global leadership on TB. Being there in person will help us build relationships and persuade them to act. Make sure your group, your state, your district are represented!

Join us for the Global Webinar on June 9 at 2 pm ET. We'll go over 1) What we can accomplish in DC, 2) How to make the most of the conference and Hill meetings, 3) How your community can impact our issues from home. We'll hear from lots of advocates and you'll get what you need to prepare for the International Conference in July. Join us! New Advocate Welcome Serie and New Resource Page

RESULTS has a brand new process for welcoming, training, and connecting new advocates to our movement! This will replace our current Introductory Call process. This will give new advocates the chance to get to know RESULTS at their own pace. It also creates a new opportunity for all new advocates to attend a live training webinar with RESULTS staff to learn more about our issues, our advocacy model, and to start advocating so they can hit the ground running when they come to your RESULTS meeting. This is a resource for your group as you recruit new advocates locally! It should not replace your personal conversations, relationship building, and welcoming at the local level, but it should help.

To enroll new people in RESULTS and the Welcome Series, have them sign up here. If you want to invite someone to the Welcome Series who is already signed up in our national database, send them here. At the end of the series, they will be invited to sign up for an orientation (dates and times are listed on our online calendar.  Questions? Contact Global Grassroots Expansion Manager Amanda Beals.

Same Link, Better Stuff. We also have reorganized the Resource Page for Advocates (thanks Beth Wilson and Deborah Lash). You can find most everything you need here. Let us know if something is missing.
