Tampa Bay Times Editorial Editor Wins Media Award

Washington, DC, June 26, 2016 — RESULTS is pleased to announce that Tim Nickens of the Tampa Bay Times has won the 2016 Cameron Duncan Media Award.

RESULTS gives this award annually to a journalist who demonstrates outstanding reporting on issues related to poverty. The award is named in honor of Cameron Duncan, a former associate executive director of RESULTS who devoted his life to fighting poverty.

Nickens, the editor of editorials at the Tampa Bay Times, accepted the award during a ceremony on Sunday, June 26, at the RESULTS International Conference in Washington, DC. An Indiana native, he has been a journalist for over 30 years. During his long career, he has taken on a variety of roles, including court reporter, political editor, metro editor, and assistant managing editor. He became editor of editorials at the Tampa Bay Times in 2008. In 2013, Nickens and his colleague Daniel Ruth won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing.

Nickens has shown a long-term commitment to spotlighting both global and U.S. poverty issues on the editorial page.

“Tim is using his platform at the Tampa Bay Times to not only inform the public about how issues like federal tax policy and global health are connected to poverty and inequality, but his work also urges our elected leaders to take action,” said RESULTS Tampa volunteer Ken Schatz, who nominated Nickens for the award. “I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award than Tim.”

RESULTS Executive Director Joanne Carter agreed, calling Nickens’ work “inspiring.”

“Tim writes eloquently and forcefully about how poverty impacts people both here and around the world, and his work has brought attention to issues that often don’t get the coverage they deserve,” she said. “We are thrilled that we could honor him with this award.”

Previous winners of the Cameron Duncan Media Award include: John Breunig, editorial page editor at The (Stamford) Advocate and Greenwich Time; Inez Russell Gomez, editorial page editor at the Santa Fe New Mexican; Greg Kaufmann, formerly of The Nation, currently editor of TalkPoverty.org; and Brenda Wilson, science correspondent for National Public Radio.
