Farm bill fails on House floor

Washington, DC, May 18, 2018 – Today the House voted to reject a farm bill that would have taken away food assistance from people struggling to find work.

Statement from Joanne Carter, Executive Director of RESULTS and RESULTS Educational Fund:

“Hunger does not help anyone find or keep a job. This farm bill – which would have taken away food assistance from one million households, including those with school age kids – was an unacceptable piece of policy that should never have been seriously considered. Now that it failed, I urge the House and Senate to craft a truly bipartisan bill that will strengthen and expand SNAP, which helps over 40 million people in the United States buy groceries and put food on the table.

I also want to acknowledge the incredible work of our advocates and partners all over the country. While we should celebrate the defeat of this bill today, we should not let our guard down. House leadership has already signaled it may try to bring back this farm bill for another vote, and as long as that’s a possibility, we must keep up the pressure and stay vigilant. I urge both the House and the Senate to create a comprehensive, bipartisan farm bill that doesn’t punish families and kids. Instead it should strengthen core assistance and support families as they strive to move out of poverty. Our communities deserve that.”
