Applauding the election of Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as next WHO Director-General

Washington, DC, May 24, 2017 — This week the member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) elected Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as the new WHO Director-General. Dr. Tedros is the former Minister of Health and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, and he has served as the Chair of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, and the Coordinating Board of UNAIDS. Welcoming Dr. Tedros to this new role, Dr. Joanne Carter, Executive Director of RESULTS and RESULTS Educational Fund, released the following statement:

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is an exceptional choice for the next Director-General of the World Health Organization. He is a visionary leader in global health, with a long track record of working to increase access to lifesaving health services both in Ethiopia and around the world. His leadership in Ethiopia helped transform the health system, train tens of thousands of community health care workers to increase equitable access to health, and bring about one of the sharpest declines in child mortality ever recorded.

As he takes on this new position, Dr. Tedros is extremely well-placed to lead the WHO in tackling the greatest health challenges of our time. Bold leadership at the WHO now can move the world closer to the end of the biggest killer epidemics, the end of preventable maternal and child deaths, and a time when all people have equitable access to health. We look forward to working with Dr. Tedros to mobilize the resources, attention, and political focus it will take to face down new threats and achieve our shared goals.
