Global Laser Talk October 2010
Currency Transaction Levy
Over 4.6 million people die every year from AIDS, TB, and malaria. But while the world faces urgent problems in the areas of global health and climate change, we are also dealing with an economic crisis. The U.S. needs new innovative ways of financing global health in light of the economic hardships we’re facing.
The Investing in Our Future Act of 2010 includes a currency transaction levy that could raise tens of billions of dollars each year. By placing a tiny 0.005 percent tax on wholesale currency tradering and speculation, the U.S. could raise billions to help fight diseases like AIDS, TB and malaria. This tiny tax wouldn’t affect average Americans and would even help to slow the kind of risky financial speculation that was as piece of what fueled the financial crisis of 2008.
